Niklas Sandler (né Laitinen) received his M.Sc. (Pharm.) in 1998 from University of Helsinki, Finland after completing his master's studies at Astra-Hässle R&D in Sweden. He got his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical technology from the University of Helsinki 2003 with the thesis entitled "New perspectives for visual characterization of pharmaceutical solids" under the supervision of Professor Jouko Yliruusi. He then worked as a senior lecturer at the Pharmaceutical Technology Division and in 2005-2006 he took up a postdoctoral position with Thomas Rades, University of Otago, New Zealand, focusing on research regarding various solid-state characterization aspects of solid pharmaceuticals. He became a Docent in Pharmaceutical Technology at the University of Helsinki in 2007. Between 2006 and 2008 he had a senior researcher position at AstraZeneca Pharmaceutical and Analytical R&D in the UK working with the material science and process engineering support related to late stage development of the company's drug portfolio. He took up a temporary position as Professor in Industrial Pharmacy (Anne Juppo's maternity leave cover) at the University of Helsinki in August 2008.
Professor Niklas Sandler is currently leading the Industrial Pharmacy research group at the University of Helsinki. The group current projects have concentrate on studies of characteristics and processability enhancement of amorphous systems and investigations on process miniaturization in supporting efficiency of development of solid dosage including enhanced formulation screening.
Niklas Sandler has a wide range of publications in the areas of new image analysis approaches for solid particulates, solid state characterization and data analysis employing multivariate techniques and neural network approaches. He has interest in excipient functionality and is a member of the international steering committee for the Handbook of Pharmaceutical Excipients.
